Welcome to the Drew Book Club Wiki

List of all books, by author List of book clubs and suggested reading lists

This book club differs from regular online book clubs in that it is not aimed at one specific audience. Using wiki software, we provide general information about the text (no spoilers though), the author, and the context, and suggest further readings, but each work might also include several sets of reading questions that we consider appropriate for different audiences.

The wiki was created by the students in one of Drew's First Year Seminars in Fall 2006 and developed further by students in the same seminar in 2007. We began the project by reading some novels that frequently appear on book club lists and thinking about the role literature serves for us as readers. Then we studied other book clubs and what has been written about book clubs (you can see a list of resources here), and explored how book clubs presented the works we had read. We looked especially at the online resources developed by Oprah's original book club and her classical texts book club. We were interested in the different kinds of book clubs and the different purposes and interests of readers, and we wanted to devlop one resource that would serve many different kinds of readers and book clubs. Once we had our goals in mind, we created various book club reading lists, and made pages for works we have enjoyed.

As the wiki devlops, we hope readers will create more lists, expand those we have, add reading questions for specific book clubs, and cross reference themes and authors.

Mission

The goal of this bookclub is to extend Oprah's desire to "get America reading again" and to be a useful resource for all readers and in particular for students and scholars. Everyone's reading experience is unique, so we have tried to cater to that by setting up different book clubs for different readers. Users of this site can select the kinds of reading and thinking questions that are most appropriate to their purpose, or they can browse all of the reading questions. We hope to create more opportunities for recreational reading and discussion at Drew and beyond, and also a space for students in college literature classes to discuss the reading material with other students outside of class. We hope you'll join us!

Posting guidelines

We invite anyone to create or revise a page on this site. Just send an email to sjamieso@drew.edu and we'll send you the password and ask you to set up an online identity (it is really easy). We ask that you use the template we have developed (you are welcome to add categories to it, but please retain the basic format). We also ask that you work with a principle of respect: for readers, fellow writers, the texts you are discussing, and fair use policies. Please see our extended appropriate use guidelines. For general coding/formatting guidelines, see Bookclub editing tips for more extensive guidelines see pbwiki's advanced style sheet

List of all books, by author

This is an alphabetical list or authors. Look for your favorite author and text. Feel free to add your own page if the one you want has not been made yet. Please also feel free to revise and edit exisiting pages (remember that page history will allow ups to track malicious edits--a violation of Drew's technology use policy). To create a new page, create the page and select the bookclub template.

List of book clubs and reading lists

This is a book club, so in addition to a simple list of books, we have developed a number of threated reading lists. Check them out--and please lte us know if you find any of them useful!
